Angels get a strong performance from Noah Syndergaard to defeat Texas 5-3
ANAHEIM CA - Noah Syndergaard pitched eight solid innings, and Brandon Marsh went 3-for-4 in the Los Angeles Angels' 5-3 win over the Texas Rangers at Angel Stadium.
This was the most innings Syndergaard pitched since May 14, 2019, against the Nationals.
"I kind of had a chip on my shoulder," Syndergaard said. "I pitched with some attitude and tempo and just tried to get the guys involved as much as possible. The defense was stellar tonight."
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Jared Walsh led off with a double to deep right-center field. Matt Duffy followed with a single. Luis Rengifo grounded out to the first base, sending Walsh home to give the Angels a 1-0 lead.
Marsh got on base with a single in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Duffy scored on a throwing error. After Max Stassi hit a ground-rule double to left field, Tyler Wade reached base on a bunt single that scored Marsh and gave the Angels a 3-0 lead over the Rangers.
The scoring continued in the fourth inning as Stassi scored on a sacrifice fly from Andrew Velasquez to extend the Angels’ lead to 4-0. Walsh hit his ninth home run of the season to give the Angels a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Rangers starting pitcher Dane Dunning went six innings and gave up 11 hits and five earned runs with eight strikeouts. Texas got on the board in the top of the eighth inning on Jonah Heim's solo home run to right field.
"I was pretty happy with myself just to get to that seventh inning," Dunning said. "It was definitely a learning experience."
Noah Syndergaard improved to 4-2 after throwing eight innings and only allowing four hits with one earned run.
Aaron Loup replaced Syndergaard in the ninth inning and gave up a solo home run to Mitch Garver, which made the score 5-2.
Raisel Iglesias came in for Loup and gave up a run, and the Rangers trailed 5-3 after Adolis Garcia hit a double to right field and Kole Calhoun scored before striking out Heim to get the save.
The Angels will send rookie Reid Detmers (2-1) to the mound in the second game of the series on Wednesday. Detmers threw a no-hitter in his last outing. Texas will go with Glen Otto (1-2).
