David Peralta’s walk-off single helps the Dodgers beat the Cubs 2-1
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Dodgers (8-7) rallied in the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk-off single by David Peralta that scored James Outman and Miguel Vargas to beat the Chicago Cubs (7-8) at Dodgers Stadium 2-1.
It was a pitchers' duo between the Dodgers' Michael Grove (0-1) pitched 5.2 innings and gave up two hits and one run, and Shelby Miller (1-0) came in the bottom of the ninth inning to pick up the win.
The Cubs, Jameson Taillon, pitched 5.0 innings and gave up two hits and seven strikeouts, and the losing pitcher Michael Fulmer (0-1), gave up three hits and two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Peralta signed with the Dodgers in February after playing with the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Tampa Bay Rays and delivered for his teammates on Jackie Robinson Day.
"It's a new team. I'm really excited to be part of the Dodgers organization, and I felt like I was due to do something to help the team," Peralta said. "I'm just happy I came through tonight."
Jameson Tailion had men on first and second base, with one out in the bottom of the first inning, but was able to get J.D. Martinez to strike out and James Outman to fly out for the third out.
The Cubs led 1-0 in the top of the fifth inning after Patrick Wisdom hit a solo home run over the center field wall.
Outman in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out, single to right field, to get things going for the Dodgers.
Vargas, who has been in a slump hitting this season, doubled down the third base line sending Outman to third base, and the Dodgers dugout was pumped.
Fulmer let a pitched high over the plate, and Peralta hit a single to right field, and when Vargas came home for the final run, Dodgers Stadium erupted.
"It was big," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "I mean our guys are grinding, they're fighting, and just to kind of see how it unfolded. You see Outman start that rally and Vargy with the big hit. You know he was dying for a knock. And you saw his excitement coming around after he got on second base and then obviously, David Peralta, who was dying for a hit, as well, to come up in a big spot and win it for us. It couldn't have ended any better."
Julio Urias (3-0) will try to improve to 4-0 and will pitch for the Dodgers on Sunday and for the Cubs Drew Smyly (0-1).
