Elly De La Cruz steals the hearts of the Dodgers’ fans after the Reds win 7-2
LOS ANGELES, CA - Elly De La Cruz stole a career-high four stolen bases and scored three times to help the Cincinnati Reds (19-25) beat the Los Angeles Dodgers (29-17) at Dodgers Stadium 7-2 to spoil Shohei Ohtani Bobble Head Night.
"Just overall a very nice setting to have a lot of fans in the stands," Ohtani said. "I'm very appreciative that they all came tonight."
Cincinnati bats got to the Dodgers starting pitcher, Tyler Glasnow, after pitching 5.0 innings, gave up six hits, four runs, one home run, and had eight strikeouts.
Nick Martinez (1-2) pitched five innings and gave up only one hit and four strikeouts as the Reds used seven pitchers and snapped the 22 games straight franchise record by the Dodgers of allowing four runs or less, and kept their big guns Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Shohei Ohtani hitless.
This was the first time Los Angeles lost back-to-back games since last month on April 19-20, and lost the last four of seven overall.
De La Cruz matched his career high for hits and reached base five times with three singles, a double, and a walk. His four steals were the most since Philadelphia's Jayson Werth had that many on May 12, 2009.
The lead-off batter, Will Benson, for the Reds, gave them a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a solo- home run off the Dodgers starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow over the right field wall. The Dodgers trail 2-0 after a double by Tyler Stephenson into right field, and Elly De La Cruz scored.
Stephenson got his second RBI of the game in the top of the third inning after hitting a single to center field, and Elly De Le Cruz scored to give the Reds a 3-0 lead.
The Dodgers trailed 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning after a wild pitch by Glasnow, and De La Cruz scored.
Cincinnati would score three times in the top of the ninth inning to lead 7-0 after Stuart Fairchild doubled into center field and Jeimer Candelario scored, De La Cruz got on base with an infield single, and Santiago Espinal scored, and when Mike Ford singled to right field, and Fairchild scored.
The Dodgers scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Gavin Lux singled to right field, and Mookie Betts and Andy Page both scored, making the final score 7-2.
