Kyren Williams and the Rams beat the 49ers 27-24 in home opener
INGLEWOOD, CA - Kyren Williams, with two rushing touchdowns and one catch for a touchdown, helped the Los Angeles Rams (1-2) beat the San Francisco 49ers (1-2) at home 27-24 with a 37-yard field goal by Joshua Karty with 5 seconds left in the game for their home opener and kept them from going 0-3 to start the season.
Williams rushed for 89 yards on 18 carries, and Matthew Stafford was cool, and calm had 221 yards passing and one touchdown, and drove the Rams downfield for 55 yards to tie the score 24-24 with a rushing touchdown by Williams.
"I think there are the games where you bring just a little bit more juice," Williams said. "Just the games where you can't wait to play, when everybody's doubting you and everybody's (saying), 'There's no way the Rams are gonna win. The Rams are gonna start 0-3.' We feel it for sure, but it's something that fuels us."
Brock Purdy, on their first possession, drove the 49ers 70 yards downfield on eight plays and threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Jauan Jennings to give the 49ers a 7-0 lead.
San Francisco led 14-0 with a 4-yard touchdown catch by Jennings, his second of the game. The Rams would trail 14-7 after a fake punt to get the first down on 4th and six yards, capped off with a 14-yard touchdown catch by Williams in the second quarter.
The 49ers went up 21-7 after Jennings caught a pass for 31 yards for his third touchdown in the third quarter.
Los Angeles trailed 21-14 with 3:53 left in the third quarter after Williams busted into the endzone for a 3-yard touchdown run.
Jake Moody gave San Francisco a 24-14 lead with his 26-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. The Rams were down by seven points, 24-17, with a 33-yard field goal by Joshua Karthy with 6:15 left in the game.
Stafford with ice in his veins would connect with Tutu Atewll for 50 yards to set up Williams tying the score with his 4-yard touchdown run with 1:51 left in the game.
Los Angeles, with 56 seconds left in the contest would force San Francisco's punter Mitch Wishnowsky to punt the ball on 4th and eight from their 45-yard line, and Xavier Smith returned it 38 yards to the 50-yard line.
The Rams would move the ball to the 49ers' 19-yard line, and Stafford would spike the ball with 4 seconds left to set up the game-winning field goal by Karty, giving them their first win over the NFC West rivals after losing to 9 of the 10 meetings.
"I'm not into improbable, probable," Stafford said. "NFL is an improbable business, I'll tell you that much. You never know what's gonna happen week in and week out. You've got to go out there and earn it and prove it, and we did that."
Purdy threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns, and Jennings had a career night, with eleven catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns.
