Las Vegas Aces are WNBA Champions after beating The Connecticut Sun 78-71
UNCASVILLE, Conn - The Las VegasAces withstood a late surge in Game 4 of the WNBA Finals to hold on and beat the Connecticut Suns 78-71 to capture the franchise for Champion.
Chelsea Gray, who averaged 18.3 ppg, scored 20-points and was named MVP to lead the Aces in scoring, followed by Riquna Williams with 17-points, Kelsey Plum with 16-points, Jackie Young with 13-points, and A'ja Wilson with 11-points and 14 rebounds.
''We are champs! We champs! We are champs!'' Wilson screamed at teammates as they pulled on their championship hats and T-shirts before the trophy ceremony.
Courtney Williams led the Sun in scoring with 17-points, Jonquel Jones with 13-points, DeWanna Bonner with 12-points, and Alyssa Thomas had another triple-double with 11-points, 11 assists, and ten rebounds.
Alyssa Thomas's layup gave Connecticut a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. A'ja Wilson's jump shot had Las Vegas trailing 4-2. Kelsey Plum's three-pointer gave the Aces their first lead, 7-6.
Chelsea Gray's pull-up jump shot gave Las Vegas a 13-6 lead. The Aces led the Sun 16-12 at the end of the first quarter after Alyssa Thomas' jump shot.
The Sun trailed the Aces 25-17 in the second quarter after a jump shot by Courtney Williams. Jonquel Jones drove to the basket and made a layup that had the Sun down by five points, 25-20, with 2:09 left before halftime. The Aces led at halftime 30-28.
Thomas tied the game 30-30 in the third quarter with a driving layup. The Sun got their first lead in the game, 39-37, with a jump shot by Jones. The Aces regained the lead 43-42 with a layup by Gray.
Jackie Young would make two free throws to give the Aces a 53-49 lead at the end of the third quarter.
The Aces led 58-53 in the fourth quarter with a three-pointer by Riquna Williams. The Sun found themselves down by three points, 60-57, after a three-pointer by DeWanna Bonner with 7:01 left in the game.
The Sun was hanging close 63-61 thanks to a jump shot by Brionna Jones. Connecticut got their second lead of the game, 69-67, with a jump shot by Williams.
Riquna Williams' three-pointer gave the lead back to the Aces 70-69 with 2:01 left on the clock.
Williams would knock down another three-point shot that gave Las Vegas a 73-71 lead with 52.2 seconds left in the game.
The Sun's defense had no answer for Williams, who knocked down a jump shot making the score 75-71. Kelsey Plum's jump shot gave the Aces a six-point lead, 77-71, with 25.2 seconds left in the game.
Young would make one free throw, and Las Vegas' 78-71 victory took the series 3-1 to celebrate their first WNBA Championship. You have to credit Las Vegas first-year head coach Becky Hammon and her coaching staff for doing a masterful job keeping their players focused.
''They're unbelievable on the court, but they're unbelievable humans, first and foremost,'' Hammon said. ''They care about each other.
They invest in each other. It's been an absolute honor to be their coach. I saw excellence, and I wanted to be a part of it.''
After the dust had settled, Mark Davis, the owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, was with his team holding up the WNBA Championship Trophy.
'Las Vegas, we are world champions,'' Davis said.
