Matthew Stafford and the Rams out of sync, fall to the Dolphins 23-15
INGLEWOOD, CA - The Miami Dolphins (3-6) on Monday Night Football pressured Matthew Stafford, sacked four times, two fumbles, and one interception, and the Los Angeles Rams (4-5) got beaten 23-15.
Their offensive line could not protect Stafford from the pass rush by the Dolphins while their offense was out of sync, and Kyren Williams rushed for 62 yards.
Puka Nacua had nine catches for 98 yards, Cooper Kupp seven catches for 70 yards, and Tutu Atwell and Demarcus Robinson both had only one catch.
"Defensively, I was pleased with the way we played," McVay said. "Ultimately we weren't able to capitalize on offense. There wasn't any semblance of complementary football. ... There have been instances where we haven't been consistent enough. Sloppy? Yeah. We have to be able to play better and be more consistent."
The only bright side for the Rams was their rookie kicker from Stanford, Joshua Karty, who made 5 of 6 field goals, and his longest field goal was from 55 yards.
Tua Tagovailoa completed 20 of his 28 passes for 207 yards, with one touchdown and one interception, but kept several drives on third downs by avoiding being sacked by the Rams and finding open receivers downfield.
Miami would score first to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after Malik Washington scored on an 18-yard touchdown run capped off going 70 yards on five plays.
The Dolphins got the first turnover when Stafford threw a pass intended for Demarcus Robinson, intercepted by Anthony Walker Jr. (LB) at their 41-yard line.
Miami would lead 10-0 in the second quarter with a 50-yard field goal by Jason Sanders.
The Rams' defense returned the favor with a turnover of their own with an interception by Christians Rozeboom (ILB) and returned to the Dolphins' 14-yard line.
Tagovailoa would be pressured and sacked by the Rams' Jared Verse at their 36-yard line and recovered by Verse with 7:37 left before halftime.
Los Angeles would trail 10-3 with a 34-yard field goal by Joshua Karty. The first half ended with the Rams trailing 10-6, thanks to Karty's 54-yard field goal.
Tagovailoa, in the third quarter, would complete a pass to Jonnu Smith for 33 yards down to the Rams' 1-yard line, and moments later, Tyreek Hill would score on a 1-yard touchdown catch to give Miami a 17-6 lead.
The Rams were trailing in the fourth quarter 17-9 with a 53-yard field goal by Karty. The Dolphins would get a little more breathing room after Jason Sanders nailed a 37-yard field goal to give them a 20-9 lead with 9:07 left in the game.
Los Angeles would trail 20-12 after Karty kicked a 22-yard field goal. Sanders would push Miami's lead up to 23-12 after kicking a 50-yard field goal.
Karty, with 0.39 seconds left in the game, would give the Rams a little hope of tying the game after kicking a 22-yard field goal, now down by eight points, 23-15, and with the onside-kick coming up, Karty kicked the ball only 8-yards to their 43-yard line and Duke Riley for the Dolphins recovered the ball to secure their win on the road.
