Pepperdine Waves Comes Up Short against TCU Horned Frogs 73-64

11/24/21 SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA - The Socal Challenge at the JSerra Pavilion featured the TCU Horned Frogs (3-1) and the Pepperdine Waves (2-4), with the Waves losing in an exciting game 73-64 on Wednesday night.

Jan Zidek led the Waves in scoring with 17-points, Houston Mallette with 15-points, and Jade Smith and Mike Mitchell Jr., both with 10-points.

Mike Miles led the Horned Frogs in scoring with 16-points, Emanuel Miller with 16-points, and Charles O'Bannon with 12-points. With the victory, it was head coach Jamie Dixon's 100th win coaching at TCU.

Waves took a 3-2 lead in the first half after a three-pointer by Mike Mitchell Jr. The Horn Frogs regained the lead 4-3 after a layup by Eddie Lampkin.

Pepperdine took an 8-6 lead with a jump shot by Jan Zidek. TCU trail 10-9 after a three-pointer by Charles O'Bannon. O'Bannon's layup gave the Horn Frogs the lead 11-10 with 12:18 left in the first half.

Jade Smith's jump shot gave the Waves a 14-11 lead. Brian Hartfield deep three-point had Pepperdine up by six points, 17-11, forcing TCU to call a timeout.

Francisco Farabello had the Horn Frogs down 17-14 with his three-point shot. TCU tied the game 20-20 with a monster dunk by Xavier Cork with 7:43 left before halftime.

Houston Mallette's jump shot gave the lead back to the Waves 22-20. The Horned Frogs trail the Waves 25-24 after a layup by Mike Miles.

TCU took the lead 26-25 after a layup by Emanuel Miller. The Horned Frogs led 28-25 with a layup by Damion Baugh with 2:03 left in the first half.

Hartfield picked up a technical foul, and Miles made two free throws for TCU, giving them a 30-25 lead. Miles's driving layup gave the Horned Frogs a 32-27 lead at halftime.

Miles led the TCU in scoring in the first half with 8-points, Miller 6-points, and O'Bannon 5-points.

Mallette led Pepperdine in scoring with 7-points and Zidek 5-points. TCU dominated the points in the paint 20-4, and their bench outscored Pepperdine's bench 14-5.

TCU led by nine points in the second half 40-31 after a dunk by Miller. The Waves trail 43-35 after a jump shot by Zidek.

The Horned Frogs increased their lead to ten points 46-36 after a pair of free throws by Micah Peavy. Mallette's three-point shot had Pepperdine down 46-39 with 13:15 left in the game, and TCU called a timeout.

After the timeout, the Horned Frogs scored with a layup by Miles, making the score 50-39. Kendall Munson's alley-oop dunk had the Waves trailing 51-41.

Mallette's three-pointer had the Waves down by five points 51-46. Pepperdine trailed by six points, 56-50 after a layup by Jade Smith with 8:58 left in the game.

Zidek was fouled on his driving layup and made his free throw that made the score 56-53. TCU went on a 6-0 run capped off by a layup by Miller, now led 62-53, forcing Pepperdine to call a timeout with 7:18 left in the game.

The Waves were hanging close with a three-pointer by Mitchell Jr. made the score 62-56. Pepperdine called a timeout after a hook shot by TCU's JaKobe Coles made the score 64-56 with 5:45 left in the game.

Zidek jump shot had Pepperdine down 65-60. The Waves were still in striking range, with a three-pointer by Zidek, and were down by four points, 67-63 with 3:48 left in the game.

The Horned Frogs led 71-63 after a pair of free throws by Miles. The Waves Zidek made a free throw after TCU called for their second delay of the game, making the score 71-64.

The main reason for the Horned Frogs' victory, they dominated the points in the paint, 40-18, and second-chance points, 17, were just too much for the Waves to overcome.
