Royals outlast Angels in wild 12-11 victory
ANAHEIM, CA - The Angels trailed 10-7 in the bottom of the ninth inning when Shohei Ohtani stepped up to the plate and hit a three-run home run to tie the game 10-10. Kansas City scored two runs in the top of the eleventh inning to secure a 12-11 win over the Angels on Tuesday night at Angel Stadium.
Ohtani finished with a career-high eight RBIs and two home runs, but it wasn't enough. This was Ohtani's 10th multi-home run game in his MLB career and fourth this season.
"This one stings," Angels' interim manager Phil Nevin said. "That room is hurting in there. You feel like it's in your grasp a couple of times, and you worked hard to get back in it. We just never quite got the lead, but a lot of great performances."
Kansas City got on the board in the top of the first inning with Bobby Witt Jr.'s solo home run. After Hunter Dozier walked, Carlos Santana doubled to score Dozier and give the Royals a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning,
The Royals took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Whit Merrifield hit a double to deep left field, which scored Santana. In the top of the 4th inning, Santana hit a two-run home run to give Kansas City a 5-0 lead over the Angels.
The Angels' first baseman Jared Walsh cut the Royals' lead to 5-1 with a solo home run to right field in the top of the fourth inning. KC added a run in the sixth inning with an RBI single by Santana.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Ohtani hit a three-run home run to cut the Angels' deficit to 6-4. Taylor Ward and Mike Trout walked to center field before Ohtani's 423-foot home run. Max Stassi's RBI single cut the Royals' lead to 6-5.
Kansas City extended the lead to 7-5 in the top of the seventh inning on Witt Jr.'s RBI double to deep right-center field.
The Angels came back to tie the game 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Ohtani hit a sacrifice fly, and Walsh hit an RBI triple to right field.
After Dozier doubled, Santana hit a single to score Dozier and give the Royals an 8-7 lead in the top of the 8th inning. Witt Jr. extended the Royals' lead with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. His second home run of the game gave Kansas City a 10-7 lead.
Ohtani's 15th home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning tied the game 10-10. In the top of the eleventh inning, Merrifield hit an RBI double and scored on Kyle Isbel's infield single to give Kansas City a 12-10 lead. Los Angeles added a run in the bottom of the eleventh inning on Ohtani's sacrifice fly to left field.
Ohtani (5-4) will take the mound for the Angels in the series finale on Wednesday. Kansas City will start Daniel Lynch (3-6).
