Sparks come from behind for the second time to beat Dallas 93-83
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Sparks had to rally and come from being down by eleven points to beat the Dallas Wings 93-83, with Jordin Canada dishing out nine assists and Nneka Ogwumike with 27 points and 12 rebounds.
Dearica Hamby had another solid game with 17 points, Karlie Samuelson with 14 points, and Destanni Henderson, with her hustle plays and nine points off the bench, helped rally them from behind 11 points in the third quarter to two points.
Nneka Ogwumike drove to the basket for a layup to give the Sparks a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. The Wings took a 9-4 lead with a layup by Natasha Howard.
Dearica Hamby would score on a layup with a pass from Jordin Canada, making the score 11-6. The Sparks would trail 18-16 with a three-pointer by Karlie Samuelson. Jordin Canada would tie the game 18-18 with a layup. The Sparks led 26-18 at the end of the quarter with a driving layup by Zia Cooke.
The Wings trailed in the second quarter 26-21 with a three-pointer by Arike Ogunbowale. The Sparks led by nine points, 30-21, with a jump shot by Azura Stevens.
Teaira McCowan and Kalani Brown made back-to-back layups had the Wings trailing 33-29, forcing the Sparks to call a timeout. The Sparks would lead 36-31 with a three-pointer by Rae Burrell.
Ogunbowale would tie the game 36-36 with a slashing drive to the basket for a layup. Samuelson gave the Sparks a 39-36 lead with another three-point shot. Dallas had regained the lead 42-41 with a basket by McCowan. Nneka Ogwumike's layup would tie the game 44-44 at halftime.
Nneka Ogwumike and Hamby led the Sparks in scoring in the first half, both with 11 points, followed by Samuelson with 8 points. Ogunbowale led Dallas in scoring with 11 points, and McCowman and Brown each with 8 points.
Azura Stevens' three-pointer gave the Sparks a 50-48 lead. Dallas tied the game 53-53 with a three-point jump shot by Crystal Dangerfield.
Howard would knock down a three-pointer to give Dallas a 59-55 lead. Dangerfield gave the Wings a ten-point lead, 67-57, with her three-pointer, and the Sparks called a timeout with 2:59 left in the quarter.
After the timeout, Nneka Ogwumike responded with a three-pointer to make the score 67-60. Ogunbowale made two free throws to give Dallas a 71-60 lead.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Destanni Henderson and Samuelson and a basket and a free throw by Nneka Ogwumike had the Sparks trailing 71-69. The Sparks were down at the end of the third quarter, 73-71, with two free throws by Chiney Ogwumike.
Dallas led 75-71 in the fourth quarter with a layup by McCowman. Nneka Ogwumike, with a step-back jump shot over McCowman, had the Sparks down by one point, 75-74. Henderson gave the Sparks the lead 76-75 with a jump shot.
Canada would drive to the basket for a layup and gave the Sparks a 78-77 lead, and Dallas called a timeout. Hamby's layup gave the Sparks an 80-79 lead with 5:21 left in the game. Henderson drove to the basket for a layup, and the Sparks now led 84-81.
Canada would knock down two free throws to give the Sparks a 90-81 lead. The Sparks would go on a 9-2 run capped off by one free throw by Canada, and two free throws by Henderson at the end of the game, to secure their 93-83 come-from-behind victory to improve their record to 7-7.
Dangerfield and Ogunbowale led Dallas in scoring each with 18 points, McCowman with 14 points, Natasha Howard with 13 points, and Brown with 10 points.
