The Chargers Outlast the Dolphins 23-17 on Sunday Night Football
INGLEWOOD, CA - On Sunday night, Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert threw for 367 yards and one touchdown and beat quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins 23-17 SoFi Stadium.
The Chargers were without their safety Derwin James, cornerback Bryce Callahan and defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day held the Dolphins to 219 yards.
The Chargers improved their record to 7-6, moving them into the last postseason wild-card spot in the AFC, ahead of the New York Jets.
Herbert set a new career best by completing 39 passes out of 51 attempts and recorded his 21st game with at least 300 yards passing.
He established a new record by becoming the first quarterback in the history of the NFL to throw for 13,000 yards in his first three seasons.
The Chargers led 10-0 in the second quarter after Cameron Dicker kicked a 33-yard field goal, and Herbert threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mike Williams.
The Dolphins trailed 10-7 after Treek Hill picked up a fumble by Jeff Wison Jr. and ran it back 57 yards for a touchdown. Austin Ekeler's 1-yard touchdown gave the Chargers a 17-7 lead at halftime.
Miami would trail by three points, 17-14, in the third quarter after Tua Tagovailoa threw a 60-yard touchdown pass to Hill. Dicker would kick a 31-yard field goal to give the Chargers a 20-14 lead.
The Chargers led 23-14 in the fourth quarter when Dicker kicked another field goal from 28 yards out. Jason Sanders' 55-yard field goal would make the final score 23-17 after the chargers recovered the onside kick.
Mike Williams led the Chargers in receptions, catching six passes for 116 yards and one touchdown, and Keenan Allen with nine catches for 92 yards.
Tagovailoa struggled to throw the football for the Dolphins, completing 10 of his 28 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown.
