UCLA Routs USC 62-33 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

LOS ANGELES, CA - The UCLA Bruins came to Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and routed their cross-town rivals, the USC Trojans, 62-33. The twenty-nine points loss to the Bruins was the most in team history.

USC freshman quarterback Jaxon Dart got his first start of the season at quarterback, completing 27 of his 47 passes for 325-yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions made some bad decisions throwing the football.

"I feel like I missed a lot, and I wasn't able to come out with a win," said Jaxson Dart."

UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson had a solid game throwing the football against USC, completing 16 passes for 349-yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions.

"It means everything," Thompson-Robinson said. "They had our tails the last two times we played, and to really hang it upon them this time and get that win out on their turf means something special."

The Trojans running game was affected, led by Keaontay Ingram carrying the ball seventeen times for 99-yards and Vavae Malepeai carrying the ball ten times for 49-yards and three touchdowns.

Dart started for USC, drove his team down the field on their first possession, and Alex Stadthaus kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Trojans a 3-0 lead in the first quarter.

USC free safety Xavion Alford got their first turnover against UCLA when he intercepted the pass by Dorian Thompson on their 42-yard line.

The Trojans did not take advantage of the turnover, as Dart threw a pass and safety Quentin Lake for the Bruins intercepted his pass on their 21-yard line. Thompson-Robinson threw his second interception when Chris Steele, the cornerback from the Trojans, intercepted the football at the Bruins' 49-yard line.

UCLA was pinned deep on their end of the field when Thompson-Robinson threw a 37-yard pass to his tight-end Greg Dulcich. Moments later, Thompson- Robinson threw a 45-yard touchdown pass to his wide receiver Kazmier Allen to give the Bruins a 7-3 lead.

USC ran the ball with Keaontay Ingram picking up big chunks on the ground, capped off the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run by Vavae Malepeai to regain the lead 10-7 to end the quarter.

The Bruins regained the lead 14-10 in the second quarter after a 23-yard touchdown catch by Kyle Philips with 9:33 left before halftime. The Bruins increased their lead to 21-10 when Thompson-Robinson connected with his wide-receiver Allen on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 6:31 left in the first half.

Things got worse for the Trojans, as the Bruins scored again when Thompson-Robinson ran into the endzone on a 12-yard touchdown run making the score 28-10.

Malepeai scored his second touchdown of the game, with a 3-yard touchdown run making the score 28-17, with 23 seconds left before halftime.

UCLA scored first in the third quarter when Philips scored on an 11-yard touchdown catch, his second of the game, making the score 35-17. USC trailed UCLA 35-20 after Stadthaus kicked a 23-yard field goal with 5:03 left in the third quarter.

The Trojans sacked Thompson-Robinson for a loss, and Nicholas Barr-Mira missed his field goal attempt, giving USC new life. USC got back in the game with a touchdown pass from Dart to Gary Bryant Jr. for 44-yards making the score 35-26.

UCLA bounced back with their special team scored on a 100-yard kick-off touchdown run by Allen. Dart had the offense on the move looking to score again and threw an interception in the endzone.

The Bruins increased their lead in the fourth quarter to 48-26 with a 4-yard touchdown run by Zach Charbonnet with 10:12 left in the game.

Malepeai scored his third touchdown with his 1-yard touchdown run, which had USC down 48-33 with 6:48 left in the game.

UCLA continued to add more points to their total after Thompson-Robinson scored on a 15-yard touchdown run that made the score 55-33.

The Bruins had the final dagger in the heart of the Trojans, led 62-33 after Ethan Fernea scored on a 42-yard touchdown.

With the win, UCLA improved its record to (5-3 in the Pac-12 Conference), and USC fell to (3-5 in the Pac-12 Conference).

"They capitalized on a lot of the mistakes we made today, and we didn't capitalize on the mistakes they made," interim Head Coach Donte Williams said. "Every time the momentum swung in our way, they did things too, and all of sudden, it swings back their way. You can't win a football game giving up 600 yards on offense, I don't care who you play."

The Bruins Head Coach Chip Kelly was pleased with the way his team played against USC.

"We're about finishing off, being resilient, and that's the thing that I'm most impressed with today, regardless of how many points were on the board," Kelly said.

Gary Bryant Jr. had a big day receiving for the Trojans with nine catches for 161 yards and one touchdown. Kazmier led the Bruins in receptions with three catches for 115-yards, and two touchdowns, and Philip had six catches for 80-yards and two touchdowns.

USC will play BYU next Saturday at the Coliseum at 7:30 PM, and UCLA will host Cal at the Rose Bowl at 7:30 PM.
