USC Beats Cross-Town Rivals UCLA 67-64 at the Galen Center

2/12/22 LOS ANGELES, CA - The #21 ranked USC Trojans (21-4, Pac12,10-4) moved into second place in the Pac-12 Conference after knocking off their cross-town rivals, the #12 ranked UCLA Bruins (17-5, Pac-12,9-4) 67-64, at a sold-out Galen Center.

Drew Peterson led USC in scoring with 27-points, 12 rebounds, five-block shots, and four assists, Chevez Goodwin 10-points, nine rebounds, Max Agbonkpolo 10-points, and Reese Dixon-Waters 10-points.

The win was huge for the Trojans, who now have beaten their cross-town rivals five consecutive times.

"This was an incredible win," USC head coach Andy Enfield said. "Without our best player on the court, in front of a packed house, this was a big-time win for us and a very, very important win because of what it means to our basketball program."

Tyger Campell had 27-points for UCLA, Johnny Juzang 12 points, and Cody Riley 9-points. Jamie Jaquez Jr. had a poor shooting night against the Trojans, making only 2 of his 11 shots with 5-points.

Campbell made a jump shot that gave UCLA a 2-0. USC tied the game 2-2 after Chavez Goodwin made a layup. The Trojans led 4-2 after another layup by Goodwin.

Juzang gave the Bruins a 6-4 lead after making a layup. The Trojans would tie the game again 6-6 after Drew Peterson made a layup. Peterson made a three-pointer that had the Trojans down 10-9.

Reese-Dixon Water gave the Trojans their first lead of the first half 12-11 after making a three-pointer with 12:21 left in the first half.

USC led 17-15 after a jump shot by Dixon-Water. Goodwin's reverse layup had the Trojans up 19-16. Peterson's three-pointer gave USC a 22-16 lead.

UCLA trail 24-19 after a layup by Max Agbonkpolo with 6:33 left in the first half. Peterson would knock down another three-pointer that gave USC an eight-point lead, 27-19.

Campbell made two free throws that made the score 27-23. The Bruins called a timeout trailing 31-23 after Ethan Anderson made a layup. Campbell made a three-pointer that had UCLA down by five points 31-26.

The Bruins tied the game 31-31 with a three-point shot by Campbell. Peterson's jump shot gave the Trojans a two-point lead at the end of the first half.

Peterson was 6 of 8 from the floor, and 3 of 3 from the three-point line with 15-points. Campbell led UCLA in scoring with 16-points and Juzang with 6-points.

USC led in the second half 35-31 with two free throws by Goodwin. The Trojans were up by five points 37-32 after a fall-away jump shot by Peterson.

Juzang would make a three-pointer that would tie the game 37-37. The Trojans led 40-37 with a three-pointer by Dixon-Waters.

Peterson tied the game 41-41 after making two free throws. UCLA led 45-41 with a layup by Jaylen Clark, with 12:28 left in the game, forcing USC to call a full timeout.

Back-to-back baskets by Agbonkpolo tied the game 45-45. The Trojans led 47-45 after Dixon-Waters made two free throws. David Singleton would make a three-point shot that gave UCLA a 48-47.

USC would take the lead back 50-48 when Anderson knocked down a three-pointer with 8:36 left in the game. Peterson continued to be unstoppable and made a jump shot that had the Trojans leading 52-48.
UCLA had to call another time-out after Anderson's layup made the score 54-48 with 6:31 left in the game.

The Trojans led by 59-51 after two free throws from Peterson. Moments later, Goodwin monster-dunk had the Galen Center rocking making the score 61-53 in favor of the Trojans.

Campbell made two free throws that made the score 61-55. UCLA was hanging close, trailing 61-57 after two free throws by Cody Riley.

With 2:57 left in the game, Goodwins made two free throws that gave USC a 63-57. With 34 seconds left in the game, UCLA trailed 65-59 with a jump shot by Campbell.

Juzang and Campell would make one free throw apiece that made the score 65-62 with 17 seconds left in the game.

Dixon-Waters made the play of the game for USC, stole the ball from Campbell, and threw a pass to a streaking Agbonkpolo down the court for a layup that made the score 67-62 with 5 seconds left in the game.

Juzang would make two free throws that had UCLA down 67-64 with 2 seconds left on the clock.

Goodwin inbounded the pass on the Bruins' side of the court, threw it short, and Campbell scooped the ball up and shot a three-pointer that went in and out of the basket, and the students stormed the court in jubilation.

"It was crazy," Peterson said. "I've never been in one of those situations. You could just feel all the energy."

It was the first time Peterson had ever experienced students rushing the floor. The Trojans will play again on Thursday hosting the Washington Huskies.
