In the first quarter, Caleb Williams threw a 37-yard reception to Austin Jones to give USC good field position on their first drive to the Spartans' 30-yard line. A few plays later, Caleb Williams threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Singer, and the extra point by Denis Lynch gave the Trojans a 7-0 lead after going 80 yards on ten plays.

USC's defense held San Jose State on third down and two at their 1-yard line, but Kenyon Reed was called for holding in the endzone to give them a first and goal at the 1-yard line.
