The Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 8-2 in Season Home Opener
LOS ANGELES, CA - Julio Urias (1-0) pitched 6.0 innings, gave up two runs and six strikeouts, and got run support as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-2 in their season home opener at Dodgers Stadium.
Their 2023 roster was without the star power that Dodgers fans have gotten accustomed to over the years, but Mookie Betts and Will Smith went 3 of 4, 4 RBIs, and Freddie Freeman delivered for their manager Dave Roberts.
"Tonight, I hope, was a sign of things to come," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "This lineup, internally, we realized how much length we had, and they certainly showed that today."
Arizona starting pitcher Zac Gallen pitched 4.2 innings while giving up six hits, and five runs, and seven strikeouts.
“We had pressure on them the whole night,” Smith said. “It was big hit after big hit. He [Zac Gallen] was close to getting out of it with a zero, but it was just nice for us that I was able to do that. We just kept going after that.”
Diamondbacks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Christian Walker hit a single to left field, and Ketel Marte came home to score.
Gabriel Moreno would hit a sacrifice fly ball to left field, and Nick Ahmed came home to give the Dbacks a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Miguel Rojas would hit a double to right field in the bottom of the third inning, and James Outman to third base.
Will Smith would hit a single down the right field in the bottom of the third inning, and Outman and Rojas came home to tie the game 2-2.
Smith would hit a blooper into right field, and Mookie Betts would score, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Dodgers led 4-2 after JD Martinez hit a single to right field and Freddie Freeman scored.
The Dodgers increased their lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning after Outman hit a two-run home run over the left-center field wall.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Smith delivered a sacrifice fly ball that allowed Outman to score, and the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 8-2.
