The Raiders beat the Rams 37-14 for their second loss in the preseason
INGLEWOOD, CA - Stetson Bennett threw for 142 yards by completing 15 of his 24 passes and rushed for one touchdown as the Los Angeles Rams lost to the Las Vegas Raiders 34-17 at SoFi Stadium.
Las Vegas finished the game with 440 yards on offense, and Los Angeles with 224 total yards. The Raiders ran 70 plays, compared to the Rams’ 50 plays, and had 25 first downs compared to the Rams with 13 first downs.
Ronnie Rivers led the Rams in rushing with 42 yards on nine carries, and Davis Allen led the Rams in receptions with eight catches for 53 yards.
The Rams’ success for this season will depend on the offensive line pass protection to allow Stafford and the other quarterbacks time to look down the field for open receivers and establish the running game.
I ask Rams head coach Sean McVay about the pass protection and the run blocking from the offensive line in the video below.
On the Raiders' first possession of the game, Jimmy Garoppolo went 4 for 4 with 39 yards and nine plays, drove the Raiders downfield to cap off a 68-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run by Brandon Bolden, and the extra point was good to take a 7-0 lead.
The Raiders led 10-0 in the second quarter with a 46-yard field goal by Daniel Carlson. The Rams would trail 10-3 after Tanner Brown kicked a 25-yard field goal.
The Rams’ defense got the first turnover of the game when inside linebacker Jacob Hummell intercepted a pass by Brian Hoyer and ran it back 21 yards for a touchdown to tie the game 10-10 with 8:42 before halftime.
The Raiders' defense returned the favor with a 50-yard interception of Bennett's pass intended for Tyler Johnson for a touchdown to regain the lead 17-10 by free safety Isaiah Pola-Mao. Bennett talked about the miscue on that play.
"Yeah, I mean, that was completely my fault. I thought that he was going to run a different route than he did and anticipated it, and he ran the one that was called, and I threw the one that wasn't, and I paid for it."
Brian Hoyer put the Raiders in good field position after connecting with his wide receiver Phillip Dorsett for 42 yards at the Rams' 22-yard line. The Raiders led at halftime, 20-10, after Carlson's 30-yard field goal to end the quarter.
Aidan O'Connell gave the Raiders a 27-10 lead in the third quarter after throwing a 12-yard pass to Cam Sims on the right side of the endzone after Josh Mc Daniels had challenged the call by the officials, but no touchdown.
The Rams would respond with a drive of 11 plays and 75 yards with a bootleg by Stetson Bennett for a 4-yard touchdown run to make the score 27-17.
The Raiders increased their lead to 34-17 in the fourth quarter after O'Connell threw a 2-yard touchdown pass in the back of the endzone to his wide receiver Kristian Wilkerson for the final score of the game.
O'Connell completed 11 0f his 18 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns, and Hoyer was 12 of 22 for 144 yards and one touchdown.
Dorsey led the Raiders in rushing with four carries for 54 yards, and Wilkerson with five carries for 54 yards and one touchdown.
