UCLA Bruins Knock Off #15 Washington Huskies 40-32
PASADENA, CA - The UCLA Bruins (5-0) held on and beat the Washington Huskies (4-1) 40-32 at the Rose Bowl with a strong performance by their quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 24 of 33 passes for 315-yards and three touchdowns.
Zach Charbonnet carried the ball twenty-two times for the Bruins for 124-yards and one touchdown, and Jake Bobo caught nine passes for 142-yards and two touchdowns.
The Huskies' quarterback Michael Penix Jr. completed 33 of his 48 passes for 345-yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions, and was sacked two times
The Huskies struck first in the first quarter when Michael Penix took their offense down the field 75-yards and threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Rome Odunze for a 7-0 lead.
UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson after the kick-off at the Huskies' 43-yard line, had the Bruins' offense at the Huskies' 3-yard line, and instead of kicking a field goal on fourth down, turned the ball over to Washington after throwing the ball out of bounds.
UCLA trailed Washington 7-2 after Penix fumbled the ball and recovered it in the endzone for a safety. The Bruins were at the Huskies' 4-yard line after a 20-yard catch by Titus Mokiao-Atmalama.
The Bruins now led 9-7 after a 1-yard touchdown run by Zach Charbonnet with 2:54 left in the first quarter.
The Huskies regained the lead 10-9 in the second quarter when Peyton Henry kicked a 50-yard field goal. Thompson-Robinson carried the ball for 7-yards for a first down to the Bruins' 48-yard line.
The Bruins scored again at the Huskies' 12-yard line when Thompson-Robinson connected with Jake Bobo in the endzone to give them a 16-10 lead with 9:50.
UCLA got another turnover when Penix's pass was intercepted and returned for 29-yards to Washington's 15-yard line by Stephen Baylock.
Moments later, Thompson-Robinson threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kam Brown to give the Bruins a 23-10 lead with 8:02 left in the second quarter.
Charbonnet caught a 33-yard pass from Thompson-Robinson down to the Huskies' 9-yard line. The Bruins led 26-10 after a 24-yard field goal by Nicholas Barr-Mira.
The Bruins' defense got their third turnover after Penix's pass was intercepted by JonJon Vaughns and ran back to the Huskies' 42-yard line. UCLA led at halftime 26-10 and held Washington to 27-yards rushing in the first half.
UCLA increased their lead over Washington to 33-10 in the third quarter when Thompson-Robinson ran into the endzone for a 2-yard touchdown.
The Huskies trail 33-16 after Penix threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jalen McMillian, and the two-point conversion was no good.
The Bruins would strike again when Thompson-Robinson threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Bobo with 3:36 left in the quarter making the score 40-16.
Washington trailed 40-24 in the fourth quarter after Devin Culp caught a 4-yard touchdown pass, and the two-point conversion by Penix was good with 12:03 left in the game.
The Huskies found themselves down by eight points, 40-32, with 3:59 left in the game when Penix drove them downfield and threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Rome Odunze, and the two-point conversion was good.
UCLA was able to ice the game by picking up two first downs to run out the clock to secure the win
