"Steady" Freddie Freeman delivers for the Dodgers with RBI in extra innings to beat Padres 1-0
SAN DIEGO, CA - The Los Angeles Dodgers had to battle the San Diego Padres in extra innings, and in the top of the tenth inning, Freddie Freeman hit an RBI single that brought Mookie Betts home to give them a 1-0 victory and made history by giving them their 107th win of the season Wednesday night, which is a franchise record.
Freeman, the MVP from last season, has led MLB with 192 hits and has been one of the clutch hitters on the Dodgers roster this year.
Beating their record from last season with106 wins, the Dodgers have averaged 100 plus wins in back-to-back seasons with some great pitching and hitting.
"To know that we've made our mark on Dodgers history is pretty remarkable," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "A lot of people have their hands on this, not just this year but, kind of building where we're at right now. It's something to be proud of."
Julio Urias (17-7) for the Dodgers held the Padres scoreless for six innings and no hits and continues to be one of their top pitchers, especially when he gets run support.
The game came down to the tenth inning when Mookie Betts was already on second base with the new format for extra innings.
The Padres had Steven Wilson replace Josh Harder on the mound, threw a wild pitch that got past their catcher Austin Nola, and Betts advanced to third base.
Moments later, Freeman hit a single to center field, and Betts walked across home plate to give the Dodgers a
1-0 victory after Alex Vesia (5-0) got his fifth win of the season, and Tommy Kahnle (1-0) picked up his first save of the season.
