Walker Beuhler and the Dodgers beat the Tigers 6-3
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Dodgers bounced back after losing to the Detroit Tigers 5-1 on Saturday night by beating them Sunday afternoon 6-3 behind Walker Buehler (3-1) pitched five innings with no runs scored, six hits, and five strikeouts.
The Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez(0-2) pitched 5.2 innings and gave up six runs, eight hits, and five strikeouts.
The Dodgers are trying to get back in stride by being more consistent with run support for their pitching staff and getting better.
''We're winning more than we're losing, but we just haven't hit our stride,'' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. ''We have a really good team coming in Tuesday (the San Francisco Giants). The last week, I don't think we've played really good baseball, to be honest. We've pitched well, which is important. I know our best baseball is ahead of us.''
Detroit had Robbie Grossman on second base and Austin Meadows on first base in scoring position in the top of the first inning, but Buehler was able to retire the side with Harold Castro popping up for the final out of the inning.
Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman got on base in the bottom of the first inning with no outs, and Will Smith hit a single to right field, scoring Betts to give the Dodgers a 1-0 lead.
Buehler loaded the bases in the top of the second inning by hitting Grossman with the baseball with two outs and struck out Javier Baez for the third out.
The Dodgers were in scoring position when Hanser Alberto and Gavin Lux got on base in the bottom of the second inning. Betts was out on a force-out at first base to advance Alberto to third base.
Freeman doubled to left field, scoring Alberto and Lux to give the Dodgers a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Trea Turner got an RBI scoring Betts from third base after being out on first base, making the score 4-1.
Detroit had runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth inning at first and second base with one out. Buehler got out of the jam getting Tucker Barnhart to hit into a double-play to end the inning.
''Nice to kind of escape one, if you will, but you still want to be better,'' Buehler said.
The Dodgers led 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Cody Bellinger doubled into right field, and Chris Taylor scored and made the score 5-0.
Gavin Lax would make it safe to first on an error by Baez that allowed Bellinger to score, and the Dodgers now led 6-0.
Detroit scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning when Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run home run to trail the Dodgers 6-2.
The Tigers made the final score 6-3 in the top of the ninth inning after Jeimer Candelario homered over the center-field wall.
Craig Kimbrel picked up his fourth save of the season for the Dodgers after getting Meadows to pop out for the final out of the game. With the win, the Dodgers improved to (14-7) and the Tigers fell to (7-14).
