Clippers "Mann Up" to beat the Jazz 131-119 to advance to Western Conference Finals
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Clippers advance to the Western Conference Finals after withstanding a brutal offensive display by the Utah Jazz in the first half, came from behind to win 131-119 in Game 6 of the Western Conference Semifinals.
Terance Mann's performance tonight will go down in Clippers history, leading the Clippers in scoring with 39-points, 15-21 from the floor, 7-10 from the three-point arc, followed by Paul George's 28-points, Reggie Jackson's 27-points, and Nicolas Batum 16-points.
"This was my first time experiencing a crowd like this since I've been a Clipper," Paul George said. "You felt it, the cheers, the excitement. You felt the monkey off of the Clippers' back in terms of getting out of the second round.
Donovan Mitchell led the Jazz in scoring with 39-points, Jordan Clarkson and Royce O'Neale had 21-points apiece, Bogdanovic had 14-points, and Rudy Gilbert had 12-points.
Terance Mann's three-point shot gave the Clippers a 3-2 lead in the first quarter. Paul George stole the ball from Mike Conley and went down the court for a layup to tie the game 5-5.
Mann made another three-pointer to give the Clippers an 8-5 lead. George missed a shot from inside the key, and Mann made a tip-in dunk that gave the Clippers a 12-10 lead that forced Utah to call a timeout.
Marcus Morris Sr. drop-back fade-away jump shot had the Clippers leading 16-13. Nicolas Batum's three-point shot gave the Clippers a 21-19 lead. Royce O'Neale helped the Jazz regain the lead 24-23 after making a three-point shot.
George made three free throws, and the Clippers trailed by two points, 33-31, at the end of the quarter.
The Clippers were down 37-36 in the second quarter after George made a jump shot. The Clippers took the lead 39-37 when Mann made a one-hand dunk.
The Jazz led by eleven points 51-40 after Jordan Clarkson's layup with 6:33 left in the first half. Clarkson's three-pointer gave the Jazz an eighteen-point lead 60-42.
Donovan Mitchell made a deep three-point shot to give the Jazz a 69-48 lead. The Jazz led at halftime by twenty-two points 72-50.
George and Mann led the Clippers in scoring both with 14-points, followed by Batum and Morris Sr. both with 7-points.
Mitchell had 22-points to lead the Jazz in scoring, Clarkson 21-points, and Royce O'Neale with 9-points. The Clippers got away from how they were able to beat Utah three straight times by attacking the paint to set up their outside game.
"In the first half, we didn't touch the paint and we took bad shots," Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue said. "I told them, if we get in the paint, we know Rudy's coming, and we can move the ball and get any shot we want."
The Clippers were 14-48 from the floor at 41.9 percent and made just 6 of 20 three-point shots for 30.0 percent from the floor, and the Jazz was 27-46 from the floor at 58.7 percent, and 12 of 19 from the three-point range 63.2 percent.
The Jazz led 75-52 in the third quarter after a dunk by George. Mann's three-pointer made the score 75-55. The Clippers were down75-59 after a layup by Mann. Conley's three-point shot made the core 81-64.
Mann's layup had the Clippers down 90-73 with 5:23 left in the quarter. Mann had ice in his veins, made a three-pointer from the left side of the court that made the score 90-78, and the Jazz called a timeout.
Mann went coast to coast for a layup, and the Clippers were down by ten points 90-80. Mann made another three-pointer that made the score 90-83 with 3:03 left in the quarter. George made two free throws making the score 90-85.
Reggie Jackson's three-pointer had the Clippers trailing by two points 90-88. Jackson made a three-point shot at the end of the quarter, and the Clippers were down 94-91.
Batum, in the fourth quarter, tied the game 94-94. Jackson's layup gave the Clippers a 96-95 lead. Patrick Beverly's three-pointer had the Clippers leading 99-98.
The Clippers had a seven-point lead, 107-100 after Batum's three-point shot with 8:40 left in the game. Bojan Bogdanovic made a three-point shot that had the Jazz trailing 107-103.
Mann made a layup to give the Clippers a five-point lead 111-105. Geroge's Jump shot made the score 113-106. Mann made another three-pointer increasing the Clippers' lead to 116-106.
"Just play my game. Shoot the open shots," Mann said. "I trust my work."
George's jump shot made the score 118-109. O'Neals jump shot had the Jazz trailing by four points 118-114. Jackson made a layup that made the score 120-114.
Beverly made a three-point shot, and the Clippers now led 123-114 with 3:06 left in the game. The Clippers were up by ten points 128-118, with 1:15 left in the game after Beverly made another three-point shot.
Beverly shot two free throws that made the final score 131-119 as the Clippers are now heading to the Western Conferences Finals for the first time ending the 50-year drought for the franchise after eliminating the Utah Jazz 4-2.
