Kershaw gives up three runs as the Padres beat the Dodgers 5-3 in Game 2 of the NLDS
LOS ANGELES, CA - The San Diego Padres bounced back from losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3 in Game 1 of the NLDS and won 5-3 to tie the series (1-1).
The Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw pitched 5.0 innings and gave up six hits, three runs, six strikeouts, and one home run, and wish some of the pitches he left hanging up over the home plate could have taken them back.
"I definitely made some mistakes that they made me pay for," Kershaw said, "but overall, I would like to have a few pitches back, but it definitely could have been worse, for sure."
Yu Darvish pitched 5.0 innings for the Padres while giving up seven hits, three runs, three home runs, and seven strikeouts.
The Padres led 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Kershaw left a pitch to hang up high over the plate, and Manny Machado hit a solo home run over the left-field wall.
Freddie Freeman tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run over the center field wall.
Kershaw got into a jam in the top of the second inning with base runners on second and third base with one out but was able to strike out Trent Grisham and Austin Nola.
The Dodgers regained the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning when Max Muncy hit a solo home run over the right-center field wall. Justin Turner got on base with a single dropping into right field.
The Padres tied the game again at 2-2 in the top of the third inning after Juan Sota hit a single into left field and Ha-Seong-Kim scored with no outs.
Kershaw had base runners on second and third base with one out and got Jake Croneworth to ground out at first base which allowed Sota to come home, and the Padres now led 3-2.
The Dodgers tied the game again 3-3 when Trea Turner hit a monster home run over left field in the bottom of the third inning.
In the top of the sixth inning, an error by Trea Turner allowed Cronenworth to be safe at second, and Brusdar Graterol allowed a single by Jurickson Profar into the right field had Cronenworth to come home to give the Padres a 4-3 lead.
"I thought he might have been a little too quick," said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. "Just to get the lead runner was really important, and I just think that the exchange wasn't good."
Graterol made a run-saving play when Trent Grisham bunted down the left-base line and threw out Wil Myers, trying to score at home for the second out.
The Dodgers were in good shape to score runs with base runners on first and third base with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Padres were able to get the Dodgers' Gavin Lux to hit into a double-play to get out of the inning.
The Padres went on to win the game Tony Gonsolin (16-1) will take the mound for the Dodgers in Game 3 of the NLDS on Friday night, and Blake Snell (8-10) for the Padres. For more photos, click on the link below
